Currency
The Danish currency is the Krone, which is divided into 100 øre.
A Euro, Visa, Cirrus or Mastercard can be used to withdraw Danish kroner from most of the many cash points installed at individual bank branches. The cash point will state which cards are accepted.
The cash points can also be used outside normal banking hours.
Currency can be exchanged in banks during banking hours. There are also many bureaux de change, which remain open outside banking hours. They are usually located in high streets and at traffic hubs.
Banking hours
Banks are normally open Monday to Friday 10 am – 4 pm, extended to 6 pm on Thursdays.
Shopping hours
Shops are normally open Monday to Thursday from 9 or 10 am to 5.30 or 6 pm. On Fridays, they normally remain open until 7 or 8 pm, although regional shops often close at 6 pm. Shopping centres are normally open until 7 or 8 pm every weekday. On Saturdays, shops close at noon or 1 pm. However, most large shops and department stores do not close until 5 pm on Saturdays.
All shops are allowed to stay open on the first Sunday of the month.
Post offices
Post office opening hours vary greatly from town to town and from borough to borough. The general opening hours are: Mondays to Fridays 10 am to 5 or 6 pm. In some instances, post offices are closed on Saturdays, and if open, the opening hours will be from 10 am to noon or 2 p.m. Some post offices are situated in the same building as supermarkets or shops, for instance, but will always display the official post office sign at the front of the building.
Emergency
Key in or dial 112 (calls from telephone boxes are free) to call the police, ambulance or fire services. Then state name and location (telephone number and possibly address).
Tipping
It is usually not necessary to tip in Denmark, where hotel bills, restaurant bills, taxi fares etc. always include VAT and a service charge. However, if a special service has been received, this can be acknowledged separately, just as separate payment is required for various services in connection with taxi rides and luggage transport.
Tax-free shopping
The easiest and safest way to obtain a VAT refund is through Global Refund. More than 4,700 shops in Denmark offer this service. A non-EU citizen travelling in Denmark can obtain a VAT refund on any goods exported from the country.
The VAT refund in Denmark ranges from 13 to 19%, which corresponds to the VAT amount less an administration fee.
If you are a citizen from a country outside the EU and Scandinavia, you can claim a VAT refund. In order to qualify for a VAT refund, the minimum purchase per shop must be DKK 300/40. VAT can be refunded at the airport on presentation of a completed VAT refund form.
You can obtain a refund through shops cooperating with two different companies, Global Refund and Euro Refund. They operate according to the same guidelines. The name of the company or companies with which the shop cooperates will be displayed on the shop door.
